How Stories Work

Every story on ToonShow is a ToonShow Original, created by our team. You choose who you are, and the story unfolds around what you write. Here’s how it all works.

The story page

Before you start, the story page gives you a feel for what’s ahead:

  • Characters in this story: tap a character to read their profile.
  • Description and Prologue preview, so you know how the story begins.
  • How many images and endings the story has.
  • Comments from other players.

Looking around is free, and you don’t need to sign in.

Setting up

  • Avatar: who you are in the story. Set the name the story calls you, and any details you’d like it to know about you.
  • Starting Scenarios: some stories let you begin from different points. Pick the one you like, then tap New Play.

Playing

Write what you’d like to say or do, and the story replies. Each reply uses Credits.

  • Suggested replies: not sure what to say? Tap a suggestion to send it, or use it as inspiration for your own.
  • Not happy with a reply? You can regenerate it for a different take.
  • Play guide: some stories include tips on how to enjoy them. Only you can see these.

Scene images

Many stories include images that appear at key moments as you play, at no extra cost. Want to see the moment you’re in? You can also request a scene image. This uses Credits, and you’re only charged if the image is delivered.

You’ll find the option beneath any reply you’ve already committed to. It shows the quote first, and once the image exists you can regenerate, hide or download it. Images you create are private to your playthrough and collect in the reader’s own gallery, alongside the images the story itself includes.

Stats and endings

Every story is different, and some come with extra features to make them even more fun:

  • Stats: some stories keep track of things like how a character feels about you, and these can shape where the story goes.
  • Endings: some stories have more than one ending, and which one you reach depends on the choices you make. You can see how many endings a story has on its story page.

Make it yours

Fine-tune how stories play in MY > Content Settings > Session Settings:

  • Avatars: create several and choose a default.
  • User Notes: tell the story anything you’d like it to remember. There are two — one that applies to every story you play, and one for the story you’re in right now.
  • Output Length: choose how long replies can be. Longer replies may use more Credits.
  • Scene images in new playthroughs: the default for stories you start from now on. Each playthrough keeps the setting it started with; changing this default does not change playthroughs you have already started — change those inside each playthrough.
  • Receive Messages: whether new playthroughs receive messages by default.

Coming back to a story

  • History keeps every session you’ve played. Tap one to carry on, or pin, rename and delete sessions. Deleted sessions can’t be recovered.
  • Favorites keeps the stories you’ve liked. Tap Like on any story to add it. Only stories are collected there; liking a character is a different act and nothing stores it.

History has its own tab in the bottom navigation bar. Favorites is on the MY page, under Content Settings.
